Ohio House Passes First Responders PTSD Benefits Bill 308

The House voted 74-22 for House Bill 308, which would allow first responders to seek workers’ compensation benefits even if they don’t have a physical condition that led to PTSD. The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation covers only physical injuries or mental conditions caused by physical injuries.

Those who suffer from PTSD have difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms might include nightmares, anxiety or depression. Suicidal thoughts or actions are also possible.

Post-traumatic stress is a mental injury for which an accompanying physical injury is not required.

This is only the first step as the Senate will have to approve the Bill and it will have to be signed by Governor DeWine.  But this is a huge step forward in providing mental health treatment for first responders who have been subject to many traumatic events while in the course and scope of their job.
